This portrait is close up so you can’t see of the sitter is sitting or standing it Just shows the face and neck. I would say everything in the portrait is mostly all the same proportion in terms of scale. N the background it was Just some simple leaves and what looks like to be a wall. The foreground and the background don’t look Joined together it looks like Watt is standing in front of something. You can only see the top parts of the sitter and the background as it is a close up. The only thing that’s being cut out is the rest of the figure. I think if I was there whilst this being painted you could smell nature and paint. You could probably here birds chirping and the wind blowing as it looks like an area where you would hear these surroundings. It looks as painted around midday. It does seem like a calm place and a very peaceful place . The lighting on the face is quite bright but the background is darker. I think it is a natural light. The light is coming from straight in and because if this I think it is during the day almost evening, but also I think it is winter because it looks quite cold. The light does cast shadows around the face I think it’s there to show some form and atmosphere, so the face doesn’t look flat. The mood in this painting is quite dull and dreary and Watt doesn’t look very happy , which I think has an effect on what the DOD which comes across as winter. Although sometimes winter is bright it will always has that effect which makes the atmosphere dull and tense. The expression on Alison Watt definitely has an effect on the mood of the painting because it Just looks as if she’s depressed and wants to cry. The sitters position is unrecognizable as you can’t see the shoulders all that you see is the neck and above the only way you can tell the mood is by the facial expression. As mentioned you can’t see the sitters clothes but from the hairstyle it looks quite classy and old fashioned. I think the artist hose the color scheme because it isn’t a very complex painting So the color of the painting being neutral I believe is relevant to the painting. Watts brush stokes in the background are part of the painting they are almost unseen , it almost looks edited to look smooth,but the face is more textural you can see a few brushstrokes. Also on the face you can see where it has tried to be blended. I think the brush strokes are looser on the background and more controlled on the face etc where you need detail. I am oblivious to how much time was spent on This painting as they are to skilled be able o tell. But, personally I think Watt may have spent less time on this painting compared to the other painting. As this painting isn’t as complex and not extremely detailed. The piece itself I would say is textural but around the cheekbones you can see dots/dabs used to blend the cheek and skin color. Watt seems to have used life like style or realistic, because it doesn’t look fake and are elements where it Just looks airbrushed. Neutral colors have been used in this painting. I think Watt used these colors to give it the look of a real person. I think because of these colors that is why t made me decide the painting realistic/lifelike piece. I don’t think they have am effect on the mood or atmosphere. Also I think the color scheme makes parts of the face such as the nose and mouth stand out. I honestly couldn’t choose between whether this image is hot or cold. At the first look I would definitely say cold but if you look closer at the painting the face gives it a warm sensation. Watt used pattern in empty and dull areas. Pattern was used well around the face using leaves and curls. Also where there is a big plain space of wall a ribbon has been added and I hint without these features it would be really empty. The pattern used was regular and uniform nothing is out of the ordinary. In this painting the pattern is subtle. Although there is no definite outline ,you can see the different shapes and where watt has used two different colors side by side with a crisp edge. I think the painting is really bland. There is nothing really interesting going on. It is really amazing though how good an artist is when they make it look so simple. I think Watt is good but I dislike this painting. I don’t think this is the best piece Alison Watt has done, cause the rest have something interesting In it which makes you remember it and makes you wonder about the painting. The other artist I’m going to investigate is Pablo Picasso. Picasso was a Spanish artist, boor in 1881 who was the son of an art teacher and showed artistic talent at a very young age. When Picasso was 19 he went to live in Paris to study new styles and to pick up new styles. The blue period was a famous period of Picasso. As the color blue symbolisms depression, when Picasso best friend committed suicide Picasso went into deep depression this is what was now as the blue period, where all the paintings are in shades of blue, have religious undertones and the subject matter is unhappy in nature. There are several reasons. Firstly, I think because at the beginning of the story, we are straight away told in detail about Marys feelings, and some of her background. We find out that she is married to a policeman, she is 6 months pregnant, and that she is a typical old-fashioned housewife and mother, waiting at home for her husband to come back from work. This is a normal and respected thing at the time this book is set in the 50s and we see that although she is perhaps a little dependant and doesnt have much of a life of her own, she is nice enough and a likeable person. You feel quite close to her and the paragraph where we find out how she feels about her husband makes you realise that she really does love her husband, and you feel quite intimately involved with her. It is almost like you are inside her mind, and throughout the story you can tell what she is thinking. It is like you have known her for a long time. Mary Maloney is presented to the reader as a normal, ordinary woman, who has a nice nature, is fairly placid and who worships her husband. The last person you would think would turn out to be a murderer. When she kills her husband after finding out that he has been having an affair, you dont immediately start to hate her in fact I began to like her even more! When I read the part where she kills him I thought, Good for you! I felt really sorry for her when I found out he was leaving her, and really disliked the husband, even though I didnt know the whole story. The part where Mary kills him, by hitting him over the head with a leg of lamb, was quite funny to read, although it was a serious thing happening, and I think that is one of the best aspects of the story its not deadly serious the whole time, there is an undercurrent of dry humour and irony. It is an unusual detective story, because you are hoping that the detectives dont solve the crime as you feel sorry for Mary and dont want her to be put into jail. The story is narrated in the third person, and not by Mary Maloney. However it is told through her eyes and from her point of view. This is quite unusual as most detective stories are told from the perspective of the detective. This method of story telling gives us an insight into Marys life without being too biased, as we dont hear only her thoughts. Although we are quite biased anyway as we are on her side throughout the story! I dont identify with Sherlock Holmes as much as Mary Maloney for several reasons. Firstly, we see him from the outside the story is told through the eyes of Watson, Holmess faithful friend. This distances us from Holmes, and indeed he is quite a distanced and solitary character, which does not help us to feel close to him. Watson is also the only significant relationship that we see Holmes having. We are not told a great deal about what Sherlock Holmes feels throughout the story or about his background. Unlike Mary Maloney, we can hardly ever tell what Holmes is thinking we have to be told his thoughts through him talking to Watson and this also keeps us distanced from him. We cant tell what Holmes is thinking because he has a superior mind to (most of) his readers and is very intelligent. In spite of all this though, you do feel some empathy with Sherlock Holmes. He is a likeable person, and funny in a quiet and clever way. But we admire him for it and you cannot help liking Sherlock Holmes, even if you are not close to him or know every detail about his life. The fact that we dont know a lot about his past actually makes him more intriguing and mysterious, which I think is an excellent quality to have in a detective! It is a classic detective story, although you do spend more time thinking about how the murder happened, and not about who did it.

I attended Ozzfest in San Antonio, Texas on July 27, 2001. Upon arrival, an enormous crowd was already drawn. Seeing all the people lined up, ready to go, made me anticipate the next moment. There were many different cultures and races. Many people were wearing t-shirts of the bands that were performing that night. Others wore shirts with vulgar language on them. Many people had long hair, body piercing, and tattoos. I also saw many parents with their children. The different kinds of people is what made the interesting and appealing. At the show, there were many booths. The booths were placed throughout the park. At one booth, they would sell the bands merchandise. People could purchase bracelets, necklaces, and clothing. There was also a mini-tattoo parlor. Tattooed bodies was really popular among the crowd. I saw a man with a tattoo under his neck that read Insane. Dragon tattoos seemed to be a crowd favorite. At the shop, were lined up to have their bodies pierced or tattooed. There was also a censorship booth. At this particular booth, people could sign a petition against censorship. This particular booth was located at the entry. People would sign as they walked into the park. A booth was also placed on side of the stages. After the bands set, people could meet and receive autographs from the musicians. The tour had two stages. The second stage had about ten bands during that show. Creative writing is anything where the purpose is to express thoughts, feelings and emotions rather than to simply convey information. I’ll be focusing on creative fiction in this post (mainly short stories and novels), but poetry, (auto)biography and creative non-fiction are all other forms of creative writing. Here’s a couple of definitions: Creative writing is writing that expresses the writers thoughts and feelings in an imaginative, often unique, and poetic way. (Sil.org What is Creative Writing?) Writing is a form of personal freedom. It frees us from the mass identity we see all around us. In the end, writers will write not to be outlaw heroes of some underculture but mainly to save themselves, to survive as individuals. (Don DeLillo) Writing of any sort is hard, but rewarding work – you’ll gain a huge amount of satisfaction from a finished piece. Being creative can also be difficult and challenging at times, but immensely fun. How to get started Many people think that just because they’ve read a lot of stories (or even if they haven’t!) they should be able to write one. But as Nigel Watts writes: There is a common belief that because most of us are literate and fluent, there is no need to serve an apprenticeship if we want to become a successful wordsmith. †¦ That’s what I thought until I tried to write my first novel. I soon learnt that a novel, like a piece of furniture, has its own set of requirements, laws of construction that have to be learnt. Just because I had read plenty of novels didn’t mean I could write one, any more than I could make a chair because I had sat on enough of them. (Nigel Watts, Teach Yourself Writing a Novel) By all means, if you’re keen, jump straight in and have a go: but don’t be too disappointed if your first efforts aren’t as good as you’d hoped. To extend Watts’ metaphor, you may find that these early attempts have wonky legs and an unsteady seat. There are lots of great books aimed at new fiction writers, and I’d strongly recommend buying or borrowing one of these: Wannabe a Writer? (Jane Wenham-Jones) Teach Yourself †¦ Writing a Novel (Nigel Watts) How to Write Fiction (and Think About It) (Robert Graham) On Writing (Stephen King) I’d also recommend starting small. Rather than beginning with an epic fantasy trilogy, a family saga spanning five generations, or an entire adventure series †¦ have a go at a short story or a poem. And if you end up chewing your pen and staring at a sheet of paper, or gazing at a blank screen for hours, try kickstarting your writing with a short exercise. Don’t stop to think too much about it †¦ just get going, without worrying about the quality of the work you produce. Tips and tricks for beginners Do some short exercises to stretch your writing muscles – if you’re short of ideas, read the Daily Writing Tips article on â€Å"Writing Bursts†. Many new creative writers find that doing the washing up or weeding the garden suddenly looks appealing, compared to the effort of sitting down and putting words onto the page. Force yourself to get through these early doubts, and it really will get easier. Try to get into the habit of writing every day, even if it’s just for ten minutes. If you’re stuck for ideas, carry a notebook everywhere and write down your observations. You’ll get some great lines of dialogue by keeping your ears open on the bus or in cafes, and an unusual phrase may be prompted by something you see or smell. Work out the time of day when you’re at your most creative. For many writers, this is first thing in the morning – before all the demands of the day jostle for attention. Others write well late at night, after the rest of the family have gone to bed. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Don’t agonize over getting it right. All writers have to revise and edit their work – it’s rare that a story, scene or even a sentence comes out perfectly the first time. Once you’ve completed the initial draft, leave the piece for a few days – then come back to it fresh, with a red pen in hand. If you know there are problems with your story but can’t pinpoint them, ask a fellow writer to read through it and give feedback. HAVE FUN! Sometimes, we writers can end up feeling that our writing is a chore, something that â€Å"must† be done, or something to procrastinate over for as long as possible. If your plot seems wildly far-fetched, your characters bore you to tears and you’re convinced that a five-year old with a crayon could write better prose †¦ take a break. Start a completely new project, something which is purely for fun. Write a poem or a 60-word â€Å"mini saga†. Just completing a small finished piece can help if you’re bogged down in a longer story. Online resources NaNoWriMo Every November, hundreds of thousands of people just like you do something extraordinary: they write a novel in just thirty days. Want to be part of the coffee-fueled, manic-typing, adrenaline-rush that is National Novel Writing Month? (NaNoWriMo for short). Make sure you sign up by October 31st. The â€Å"rules† state that you can’t start writing Chapter 1 until 00.01am on November 1st but you can spend as long as you like before that planning†¦ Authors’ websites and blogs I read lots of websites and blogs written by authors and these give real (sometimes harsh) insights into what it’s like to write professionally. One which has been a strong favourite of mine for many years is Holly Lisle’s. Check out her advice for writers and her weblog. She also has an excellent newsletter which I subscribe to, and some very thorough and helpful e-books on various aspects of writing available for purchase. Competitions listings Having a theme and a deadline can make a startling difference to a writer’s motivation! If you’re in the UK, Sally Quilford’s competition listings are a comprehensive and regularly-updated list. I Should Be Writing podcast This is a practical and inspiring podcast: I Should Be Writing by Mur Lafferty. Why We Can’t Wait In the 1960’s, the unfair social conditions and attitude towards Black Americans portray in the passage Why We Can’t Wait by Martin Luther King. He evokes sympathy for African Americans within images of harsh reality of supposed â€Å"freedom† for Blacks. The war between capital punishment and life without parole is an ongoing debate being waged between the states. Capital Punishment, or the death penalty, is the process by which an individual is put to death by the state for a capital offense, whereas life without parole is when a capital offender is sentenced to a life behind bars with no opportunity for freedom. The choice to adopt or abolish capital punishment is up to each state, and it is the state’s verdict to determine if capital punishment is unjust or not. On occasion, the judicial system is found of unlawfully accusing innocent victims to life without parole and have sent them to Death Row. Studies have shown that since 1992, fifteen inmates on Death Row have been set free for being proven innocent. Such a high number indicates a high possibility that more inmates may be exonerated in the future for crimes they did not commit. No person should be put to death in that manner, I would rather them be forced to suffer an eternity in a minute, confined cell with nothing than for them to be put down. DNA advances are being made to allow scientists and law enforcement officers to better determine the responsible party for each case, and so those wrongly accused may get a reprieve from their sentence to be set free (Crime Library).
